A 28-year-old man was killed after a fight, allegedly over firecrackers and a broken chain, turned violent in Gujarat’s Junagadh on Diwali night.
The incident took place around 1 am on October 21, when Divyang Vinod Chudasama (28) was out with his friends bursting firecrackers. A sutli bomb (a type of firecracker) from a group across the street allegedly went off next to a child in Chudasama’s group. This allegedly led to a verbal altercation and a minor scuffle.
When Chudasma realised a chain that he wore around his neck broke during the scuffle, he went back to argue with the group. This time, things turned violent, leading to an “assault with pipes and sticks” and a blow to the victim’s chest causing his death.
According to the FIR filed at the ‘C’ Division police station in Junagadh, based on a complaint by the deceased’s mother Pushpa Vinod Chudasama (55), she had lost her husband and elder son in two different incidents five years ago. She lived with Chudasama, her younger son. He worked in a telecom company, and ran a car business in partnership as well.
Pushpa said she came to know about the incident after being woken up at night. Her son was declared dead after being taken to the GMERS Junagadh Civil Hospital.
The FIR has named Ram Barad, his wife, his son Ramshi, and two other men named Raj Hun and Keval Joshi as the accused. They were booked under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita sections for murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, voluntarily causing grievous hurt and reciting obscene words.
PI Vatsal Savaj of the ‘C’ Division police said that the cause of death was a sharp metal object near Chudasama’s collar bone. He added that all five accused had been arrested.
