Bhanumati Rawal,a 52-year-old widow deserted by her son, organised a Swayamvar for herself at Paldi on Sunday and selected a life partner. Bhanumati, who has been staying at an old-age home after the death of her first husband a year ago, selected Patan-based astrologer Rajendra Rawal,in mid-fifties,from among 35 participants.
Bhanumati said she came to the old-age home a few months ago after her only son refused to keep her at his house. But she did not find solace here, and so approached the voluntary organisation Vina Mulya Amulya Seva to hold a swayamvar. One of the conditions laid down for the participants was to marry her with the consent of their children.
After selecting Rawal, she said,I will stay with him at his house, cook for him,go out with him and live a blissful married life. Now I am relieved of all tensions. On the absence of her son,a taxi service provider, she said,I have forgotten that chapter of my life. I have started afresh and do not wish to think about my past.
Her partner Rawal said he was overwhelmed on being selected and compared todays event with a television reality show. I loved to watch Rakhi Sawants swayamvar and did not miss a single episode. I had a fascination for swayamvar but never thought that I would get married in this fashion. Bhanumati made my dream come true, he said.
He added: When I made it to the last three,I knew I am her man today. In fact, after getting a call from the organisers and inquiring about her,I got the feeling that she is the right woman for me and she would select me. I met her two days before the swayamvar and today,I came in a car from Patan, knowing that I would go back with the bride.
Rawal, who has a 24-year-old son working with a private firm in Patan, said he was impressed with the strength she showed in overcoming the odds after her son disowned her.
