The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Thursday put off its decision on the Rs 255-crore project to inject treated sewage water into the Sabarmati river to keep it alive through the year, after its standing committee asked for more discussion. The Sabarmati, which is not a perennial river, has to be sustained by channelling the Narmada river waters into it. With the AMC executing a multi-crore riverfront development project,it is necessary for the river to keep flowing. So,the AMC has proposed the project that will treat citys sewage water and release it into the Sabarmati.
The sewage water plan will be on the agenda of the AMC Standing Committee at their next meeting scheduled next week. Its a first-of-its-kind project in the country where a river will be filled up with good quality tertiary water. It has to be cleared, said AMC Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.
