In a step forward to help cybercrime victims deal with the mental agony that they face,  the state cybercrime cell and anti-bullying cell have been adopting counselling to mitigate suicides, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

The state cybercrime cell shared several instances from last month where callers reached out to its helpline 1930. On December 18, a resident of Ahmedabad reported that an unknown caller made a video call on his Whats-App number and threatened to make his nude video viral. The accused also demanded money. The victim couldn’t go to work and wanted to die by suicide. However, counsellor Hina Shrimali educated him and his wife about cyberfraud and eased their stress. A case was also lodged.

On December 19, two other cases were handled by counsellor Tarun Parmar. A girl studying in Class XII met a boy in person after chatting on Instagram. When she rejected his attempts to further pursue her, the boy threatened to make a fake Instagram ID with her “dirty photos” and send messages to her friends. The girl stopped going to school and when the parents came to know about this, they scolded her. She suffered mental harassment and thought of killing herself. When they called the helpline, the parents were told to “provide support and warmth” to the girl. The state cybercrime unit spoke to police and the boy’s phone was taken to delete all pictures. A settlement was reached and the Instagram ID was blocked permanently. The same day, another caller tried to kill herself by drinking phenyl after knowing her husband made her private videos online. However, the counsellor provided timely help.

Two more cases were reported on December 22 and 23 in which the cybercrime cell helped prevent suicides.
