A hydraulic crane fell on a building during Metro construction work in Surat’s in Nana Varachha area on Thursday, damaging a part of the building. While the driver of the crane incurred minor injuries, no civilian was hurt in the incident. Surat Metro Rail director Prashant Kulkarni said the incident took place when two cranes were deployed to launch girders. “Due to some unknown reason, the boom of one of the cranes got bent and fell on a nearby building… the other crane was also damaged,” he added. Besides the building that suffered minor damages, a few of bikes were also damaged.
One of the cranes was of 400 metric tonne and the other of 375 metric tonne capacity. After the collapse the traffic on the street was diverted for some time.
This is the second incident on the metro project in a month. On July 30 a span witnessed cracks at Saroli in Surat.
The project is being executed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRC), a Special Purpose Vehicle for the metro rail project with a 50:50 stake of the Central and State governments at an estimated cost of Rs 12,020 crore.
