The Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Monday adjourned till April 27 the hearing on the bail application of VHP leader Jaydeep Patel in the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre case. Before the adjournment, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted an affidavit opposing his bail plea.
The SIT opposed Patels plea saying the investigation into the case is still on. The investigation team has also contended that there are 23 witnesses who have named Patel in their statements.
Witnesses are said to have stated that Patel was present at the riot scene and distributed weapons and inflammable material among the rioters.
Witnesses had even seen him with swords at the site.
It has also been mentioned in the affidavit that in one of the original complaints in connection with the case, which was later merged with another complaint,Patels name was mentioned as accused. So,his involvement is not belated.
The SIT stated that if Patel gets bail,he might influence the investigation.
Earlier during the hearing of Maya Kodnanis bail plea, the court had stated that she had filed it prematurely as the investigation was on in the case and the chargesheet had not been filed.
Calling the bail application hasty,Sessions Judge A K Aswani has kept it for further hearing on April 27.
Now,the court is likely to conduct simultaneous hearing of the bail applications of Kodnani and Patel.
