In an attempt to minimise the difficulties for visually impaired people on the city roads, the Ahmedabad police commissioner has initiated Project Roshini under the Suraksha Setu Programme.
According to city Commissioner of Police Shivananad Jha,the roads around the Blind Peoples Association (BPA) campus have heavy traffic flows and these people face difficulties to cross them near the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad or to take a bus from the stand, which is on the opposite side of the BPA.
Addressing a press conference on Friday,he said,The visually impaired citizens will be given sticks with passive radio frequency chips, which will have active sensors. When they come out of BPA campus, the sensor will send an SMS to the traffic police posted at BPA crossroads/Andhjan Mandal that a visually impaired person is about to cross the road. It will also start LED display and announcement on the speakers installed near the zebra crossings. A traffic policeman will also assist the visually impaired citizens. The similar system will be installed at the BRTS bus stand to alert the officials about their arrival.
Jha also instructed the Vastrapur police station officials to make the office friendly to visually challenged people,as the BPA campus falls under its jurisdiction. In the first phase,Braille printers will be installed so that complaints or applications can be printed.
Books on important laws like women safety, empowerment of persons with disabilities Act will also be provided to policemen,he said.
Talking about job opportunities for them,Jha said,The police department is also planning to provide free vocational training for typing and translation to visually impaired citizens. Once they get proficient in it,the job of translation of legal documents at the police station will be handed over to them.
