The issue of power theft in a residential society at Vatva came to the fore during investigation after a woman died of electrocution on Sunday.
Kanta Kanjibhai reportedly touched a live wire when she went to Mehjabeen Park opposite her house to keep her chicken in a nest there. She was rushed to L G Hospital where she was declared dead.
The police said they found that the society residents were using power without authorised electric connections.
Sub-Inspector B M Vasava said,The society has not been given electricity connection from Torrent Power. The electric wires are loose and no meter boards were found. We have asked Torrent Power to conduct an inquiry. After the company submits its report ,we will investigate the matter. Torrent Power supplies power in Ahmedabad city.
The police further said the society houses 60 families and has been using electricity without a legal connection for last many years. They had reportedly taken electricity connection through cables attached to main electricity box located a few km from the society. Officers from Torrent Power will examine the spot and carry out an inspection on Tuesday.
The police have lodged a case of accidental death and have begun probe.
