A Total of eight people were injured when CISF Constable Balwinder Singh Rezvi went on a shooting spree in the Naroda Gam area on Tuesday night,but police Constable Mukesh Rathod (32) possibly escaped death by a whisker.
Rathod was coming from the police commissioners office on his scooter when a bullet hit the metal portion of the belt on his uniform. Now recuperating in the Civil Hospital,Rathod has been in the police department for 13 years.
Dhruv (7),another victim,is the son of police Constable Atinkumar Brahmbhatt,and resides in the nearby police quarters. Dhruv was with his parents when a bullet grazed his right shoulder.
Brahmbhatt said: I told my family to stand at one place as I crossed the road to take my scooter. Before I could start the scooter,I heard gunshots from the police lines and people running helter-skelter. I could do little but watch the incident. When the firing stopped I rushed to my family and saw Dhruv injured. We immediately took him to the hospital.
Dr M M Prabhakar,Medical Superintendent,Ahmedabad Civil Hospital,said the condition of two was stable and they are out of danger.
Three other victims of the firing were rushed to the nearby Rudraksh Hospital at Naroda Patia. One of them,Ekta Vyas,was later shifted to Apollo Hospital.
Urvashi Darji (22),who sustained injuries in her throat,was operated upon and kept in the ICU in Rudraksh Hospital till afternoon. Urvashi had gone to Naroda Gam with her relatives for dinner at a hotel there when the firing started.
Urvashi had joined the AMC-run Shardaben Hospital as staff nurse a couple of months ago and her father,who runs a tailoring shop in Kuha village in Daskroi taluka said Shardaben Hospital authorities did not inquire about her absence from duty.
Hitendrasinh Vaghela (19),another victim undergoing treatment at Rudraksh Hospital,is a first year student at ITI Saraspur and is the son of an autorickshaw driver in Avadh Tenament in Thakkarbapanagar. He was at the spot with his cousin when he was hit by a hit in the calf. As we finished dinner and came out of the restaurant,I was hit in right calf, he said.
Dr Vipul N Tilva at Rudraksh Hospital,who had treated the injured was not available for comments.
