Cong MLA wants ban on sale of trust-run schools in walled city

Congress MLA from Dariapur Gyasuddin Sheikh has sought a ban on the sale of trust-run schools within the walled city and their conversion into commercial properties and demanded that the state government take over all such schools.

In a letter to state’s Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma,Sheikh said that a number of trust-run schools were selling their properties to builders and realtors for profit.

The biggest casualty in the process,he said, was the education of students, mostly from the poor financial background. As the prices of real estate in the old city has also skyrocketed along with the sharp rise in property prices in other parts of the city,Sheikh said many trusts now preferred to sell the school buildings and its lands in the walled city.

He said the closure of the schools meant shifting students to schools located at distant places. As it involved extra expenditure in daily travel for students, the parents of poor students would not be able to bear it and ultimately, such students would lose the opportunity of getting education.
