The Narmada police Wednesday was granted three days of police custody of Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat’s Working President and Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava’s personal assistant Jitendra and a farmer, Ramesh Vasava, in the alleged November 2 case of rioting, extortion and assault of forest officers.

The sessions court, which was scheduled to hear the bail petition of the three arrested persons, including Chaitar’s wife Shakuntala, first considered the revision petition that had been filed by the police on November 4 after the police remand application was rejected by the local court on November 3.

While the bail petition of the three accused — Shakuntala, Jitendra and Ramesh Vasava — was also listed for hearing at the district sessions court, the court preferred to hear the revision petition filed by the police first as per procedure.

Narmada Superintendent of Police Prashant Sumbe told The Indian Express, “In case of a revision petition seeking remand, it has to be given preference over a bail plea. So, the court heard our petition first although it was listed for Thursday. The sessions court granted three days of police custody of Jitendra and Ramesh against the ten days sought by the police.”

Shakuntala, who has been in judicial custody since the night of November 3, was rushed to the Rajpipla civil hospital Tuesday after she complained of chest pain.

AAP Gujarat President Isudan Gadhvi also paid a visit to Shakuntala late evening. The police had sought remand of the accused to investigate the alleged extortion and the call detail records of the accused.

The police will separately move the sessions court for the remand of Shakuntala once she is discharged from the hospital.

Sumbe said, “We are awaiting the court order, which will clarif the time from when the remand of the two accused will be considered. We do not have them in our custody yet but we are expecting the order copy shortly.”

The district sessions court will now hear the bail plea Thursday. Meanwhile, a manhunt is on to look for Chaitar Vasava, who has been evading arrest since November 2. Sumbe added, “The police are on the lookout for the MLA. We are close to finding him. There is no look out notice as of now.”
