Even as Chaitar Vasava, the Dediapada AAP MLA and the party’s working president in Gujarat, is yet to surrender before police after he was accused of threatening forest officials, the party has implied that he will be the candidate for the Bharuch parliamentary constituency in Lok Sabha elections due next year.

AAP national joint secretary Gopal Italia on Monday announced the launch of a door-to-door campaign in Bharuch for Vasava ahead of the general elections. Hours before the announcement, Italia said that the party workers from the Narmada district had “kickstarted” the campaign by offering a copy of the campaign material to the Yaha Mogi Devi revered by tribals in these parts.

Vasava has been “missing” from public view ever since an FIR was lodged against him for allegedly threatening forest officials with a gun over a month ago.

The decision to campaign for Vasava was taken at a party meeting. Vasava’s candidature, Italia added, is being endorsed for the Lok Sabha election in a bid to get justice against the torture he faced.

The party has decided, Italia said, that justice would be served only if he is made a member of the parliament.

Addressing mediapersons, Italia said, “There was a meeting of AAP at Dediapada Circuit House today and it was decided in the meeting that in the coming days, we will meet every individual in every village of Bharuch to make sure Chaitarbhai wins. In the meeting, it was unanimously accepted that we cannot sit in the hopes or expectations of getting justice by only making the rounds of the police station or courts. We will go to each household and make Chaitarbhai win.”

Vasava is facing charges of threatening public servants, and for offences under the Arms Act, and has an arrest warrant issued against him. He has been booked after he allegedly threatened forest department officials and fired a round in the air with a weapon at his residence at Dediapada in Narmada district on October 30. The FIR alleges that Vasava and his family members abused five forest officials and assaulted one of them, who later filed a complaint with police.

Vasava has earlier expressed his desire to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Bharuch. Tribal party workers of Narmada district on Sunday offered a “pamphlet” to the deity of Yaha Mogi Devi and launched a campaign, backing his candidature for the Bharuch Lok Sabha constituency.

In a video message from the temple premises, party workers could be heard saying, “We all know that Chaitar Vasava is a hero for the people in his constituency and has been trapped by the government machinery at the behest of the BJP… We are beginning this campaign by distributing pamphlets in his support. We are confident that not only will he safely emerge through this problem but he will also win the Lok Sabha constituency.”
