Youth commits suicide inside police station in Mehsana
Mehsana: A youth allegedly set himself on fire on the Unjha town police station premises on Friday,while protesting against police atrocities inside the lock-up. He later succumbed to the burn injuries,police said. Kalpesh Suthar,30,was arrested on Wednesday after his stepmother Chandrika lodged a complaint regarding a dispute between them over their house in Kamli village. He was released on bail the next day. Kalpesh had alleged that he was beaten up by police and sent to jail on a false complaint. On Friday morning,he reached the police station premises of Unjha town and set himself on fire after putting kerosene on him. He was rushed to the Mehsana civil hospital where he died. Mehsana Superintendent of Police R J Sawani has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
PIL on election of 3 corporators from one ward rejected
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court on Friday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL),which had challenged the practice of electing three corporators from a single ward of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The petitioner,Pankaj Vaghela,had prayed that as per the electoral scheme,one constituency should have one elected leader and a citizen is entitled to case only one vote. Therefore,the present practice is unconstitutional. A division bench of HC turned down the petition while holding that it is not illegal in electing three corporators from one ward in AMC.
HC allows merger of seven Adani group firms with AEL
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has given a go-ahead to the amalgamation of seven Adani group companies with Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL). Justice K A Puj approved the amalgamation in his order on Thursday.
The court said considering their affidavit,submissions and the judgments relied upon,the Court is satisfied that the observations made by the Regional Director could not come in the way of sanctioning the scheme by HC. The scheme neither violates the provisions of the RBI Act nor the FEMA Act,it said.
Governor to hoist Tricolour at Raj Bhavan
AHMEDABAD: Governor Dr Kamla Beniwal will unfurl the National Flag at the Raj Bhavan at 8 am on the Independence Day,sources said on Friday. After hoisting the flag,she is scheduled to plant tree saplings and later meet freedom fighters at Raj Bhavan around 5 pm. Besides,the state government has introduced a number of special programmes for the freedom fighters.
Speaker admitted to hospital,stable
AHMEDABAD: State Assembly Speaker Ashok Bhatt was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of uneasiness on Friday morning. Bhatt (72) is a seven time MLA from Khadia consitutency in Ahmedabad and has held ministerial portfolios earlier. He was admitted to Sal hospital ,where the doctors said his condition is stable. He will kept under observation for next two days.

UN Mehta nurses resume work
AHMEDABAD: The nursing staff of U N Mehta Heart Institute resumed their work on Friday following an intervention by the Gujarat High Court. The nursing union had gone on a strike after the hospital authorities suspended three leaders of the association. The association termed the suspension a move to victimise their leaders for carrying out union activities.
After the authorities invoked Gujarat Essential Services Maintenance Act against the nurses,the association challenged the matter in the HC.
Associations lawyer Rajesh Mankad said the HC asked them to resume work and to negotiate the issue. He said the court also asked the hospital to take a sympathetic approach to the associations demands.
A meeting will be held on Saturday. The HC will hear the petitions on Monday, said Mankad.

Absconding Shah aide files anticipatory bail plea
Ahmedabad: One of the absconding accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case on Friday approached a special CBI court here for anticipatory bail. The court will hear the case on August 19.Ajay Patel,a close associate of former minister Amit Shah,is the chairman of the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and is accused by CBI of threatening witnesses.
The court had earlier issued a warrant against Patel,who has been absconding since his name appeared in the chargesheet.
The SC on Thursday gave three months to CBI to complete investigations in the case in which four IPS officers.

Abhay Chudasama wants a copy of CID chargesheet
AHMEDABAD: Suspended IPS officer Abhay Chudasama moved an application to get the copy of the main chargesheet earlier filed by CID (Crime) in the case. CID (Crime) was investigating the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case before it was handed over to CBI by the Supreme Court. After taking over the probe,CBI arrested Chudasama and former minister of state (home) Amit Shah and submitted its own chargesheet.
