Bridge collapse in Vadodara: Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel orders inquiry, he and PM Modi announce compensation for victims

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered an inquiry into the bridge collapse in Vadodara district and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who died in the accident.
At least nine people were killed, and nine others were rescued after multiple vehicles fell into the Mahisagar river when the 43-year-old bridge collapsed early Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured in the accident.
CM Patel made the announcement in a post on X. “The accident where Gambhira bridge that connects Anand with Vadodara collapsed after one of the 23 portions of the same broke down is sad. I pray to God for those killed in the mishap…I have spoken to the Vadodara Collector and instructed (him) to provide immediate treatment to the injured on priority.”
The CM said that the teams of local municipality, Vadodara Municipal Corporation and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have joined the relief and rescue operation.
“Orders have been issued to Roads and Buildings Department for immediate inquiry in the accident,” the CM said while adding that the Chief Engineer – Design, Chief Engineer, and two private experts in bridge building have been instructed to reach the accident site immediately, hold an immediate inquiry and submit a report on the reasons behind the bridge collapse.
“The government will provide financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the heir of the deceased. Financial assistance of Rs 50,000 will be given to those injured, and their treatment will be provided by the state government,” the CM said.
He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to him while getting details of the accident.
In a tweet on X, the PM posted, “The loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
He added, “An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”
