Book documenting architecture of Gandhian heritage sites launched

The task of coordinating the creation of the architectural database was entrusted to SAPMT. The book presents detailed architectural drawings of 11 core sites and representative drawings of 15 index sites.

A book documenting the architecture of Gandhian heritage sites, titled Gandhi’s Places- An Architectural Documentation, was released by the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT) on Wednesday. The editors of the book are city-based architects Prof Neelkanth Chhaya and Riyaz Tayyibji as well as Gandhian scholar Prof Tridip Suhrud. The project was set up in 2013 by the Union Ministry of Culture under the Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission “to identify, conserve and preserve the built heritage associated with the life and work” of Gandhi, a statement from the Sabarmati Ashram said.

Each set of drawings is accompanied by a note on the significance of the site, mostly in Gandhi’s own words. Three essays reflect on the meanings of the built heritage of Gandhi.

“This first book of its kind would be invaluable to architects, designers andhistorians,” said the statement.  Chhaya was formerly the dean of faculty of Architecture at CEPT University, and is the inaugural recipient of the Balkrishna Doshi Guru Ratna Award 2023. Tayyibji, who restored a bicycle used by Gandhiji, also teaches at CEPT University.
