Law enforcement agencies in Ahmedabad are investigating an alleged bomb threat on an international flight that landed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport Monday.

This comes at a time when there has been a surge in the number of hoax bomb threats on Indian flights.

According to the police, a letter claiming there was a bomb on the flight was found on an Indigo flight that had landed from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at around 9.30 am. The letter was allegedly found in a security sweep of the aircraft after the passengers had deboarded.

“A thorough investigation by the Ahmedabad City Police, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is now underway to determine the authenticity and seriousness of this threat,” Ahmedabad Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Crime Sharad Singhal told The Indian Express, adding that passengers on the aircraft were asked to stay back for the investigation.

The year 2024 saw bomb threats skyrocketing, with the Ministry of Civil Aviation estimating that Indian airlines received 728 bomb threats, of which 714 of which were by domestic carriers. The threats prompted the Indian government to put in place protocols for handling such threats as part of the Bomb Threat Contingency Plan (BTCP).
