2 injured in bear attack at Chhota Udepur village

The Zoz village in the Chhotaudepur district has witnessed four bear attacks in the last week.

The Chhota Udepur forest department in Gujarat on Thursday began a search for a sloth bear that attacked a 45-year-old man early in the morning as he ventured near the forest area to pluck mauve flowers.

An unidentified woman was also injured while trying to flee the area as the animal charged towards her, before disappearing into the forest, officials said.

According to officials, the attack took place around 6 am on Thursday when the first victim, Rasik Nayak, was venturing into the area, about 200 metres from the forest. On noticing Nayak wounded — severe injuries on his face and head — locals immediately took him to the Chhota Udepur referral hospital and then to Vadodara’s SSG Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

minor injuries in the incident, they added. On being informed, police and district forest officials arrived in Chhota Udepur taluka’s Zoz village and launched a search for the bear.

“The locals came to the aid of Nayak and the woman with sticks immediately, causing the bear to retreat into the forest. A search has been initiated to capture the animal; it is suspected to be behind four attacks in Zoz village in the past week, causing fear among the residents,” a forest department official said.
