An abandoned bag containing electronic gadgets, papad and some medicines, misplaced by a woman from Vadodara headed to the US,created a scare at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport late Monday night.
The airport officials informed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) that a carry bag was lying unclaimed outside the Air India office near the parking lot of the international terminal.
The CISF personnel brought their dog squad that indicated suspicious materials lying inside the bag. The officials immediately informed the bomb disposal squad (BDS) team at about 11:30 pm.
According to the BDS officials, they reached the airport at about 11:55 pm and scanned the bag. They said that the bag contained a couple of still cameras, medicine and locally made papad. They also said the dog squad alerted the CISF due to the typical smell coming out of the papad and the medicine.
While they were examining the bag,a non-resident Indian,Shefali Uday Kumar, came to the spot and claimed the bag. She told the security officers that she had forgotten to take her bag.
According to the officials, she was to catch an Air India flight to Newark at 8:30 pm but the flight had got cancelled.
She went back to Vadodara after she was informed that the flight was cancelled at about 10 pm. On her way,she realised that one of her bags was missing and came back to the airport looking for the bag.
She was handed over the bag after a thorough scanning by the BDS officials.
The Sardarnagar police recorded her statement before letting her go.
