Arrives in Mumbai with son Prithviraj; says encounters genuine, judiciary strong and just

Former Gujarat Deputy Inspector General D G Vanzara reached Mumbai at around 7.15 pm on Wednesday, accompanied by his son Prithviraj. He was received by some close family members, including daughters of his brother K G Vanzara, and a small group of supporters.

“The encounters were genuine. The charges levelled against us and the subsequent investigation was fake. I and the Gujarat police were victims of Indian politics. My officers were and are innocent, and very soon everything will be clear. The Indian judiciary is strong and just, and it is the judiciary that has freed me after eight years,” said Vanzara.

The former top cop refused to name any particular party or person when asked who had framed him. Vanzara will be staying with some relatives in Chembur. He has been directed to appear before the court in Ahmedabad every Saturday.

He has been provided armed security, which includes one guard armed with a carbine and a personal security officer with the security branch of the Mumbai police. “I went straight to the airport and flew to Mumbai, honouring the directions of the court. I have not even met my family in Gandhinagar,” Vanzara said.

When asked if he had any political plans for the future, he said, “I am a soldier, a proud policeman. Even though I’m now retired, once a policeman, always a policeman. I have neither interest, nor inclination for politics.”
