For Sagar Dhamecha of Amreli, who topped the SSC state board examination this year, the success was no cakewalk. His father Deepak,a tailor by profession, had to cut down on household expenses so that Sagar could go to the best school in town and join private tuition classes.
The result: Sagar with 96.92 per cent secured the first rank in the state merit list announced by the Gujarat Secondary Education Board on Thursday.
Sagar,a student of Deepak High School, not only made his fathers dream come true, but has also become a role model for students in the
district, which gave its first state topper in any board exams since Independence.
Due to financial problems,my father had to leave his graduation midway and became a tailor. He,however, resolved to provide us with the best education, said Sagar, adding,I am on cloud nine today.
He further said,No late nights and no early mornings. I studied only during the day. Sagar added that he hardly watched television or movies in the last 12 months. The 15-year-old has plans to pursue engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology.
As the results were declared in the morning,it meant celebrations not only for the Dhamechas, but for the entire town. A huge procession with several vehicles, led by a motorised chariot with Sagar aboard, passed through various parts of the city. The school authorities, who had organised the procession, also announced a scholarship of Rs 51,000 per year for Sagar for the next five years.
Incidentally,Sagar is not the lone family member to see his name in the merit list. In 2006,his sister Hiral was among the top 10 Science students in the district and went on to pursue degree course in pharmacy.
