At an event in Ahmedabad last week, an English translation of the first-ever biography of Dr B R Ambedkar, which was written in Gujarati, was released by Vijay Surwade, an acclaimed scholar on Ambedkarite literature.
The original book in Gujarati with the title — Dr B R Ambedkar Esquire – M.A., PH.D., Barrister at Law, MLC and DLC — was written in 1940 by U M Solanki from Khanpur area of Ahmedabad. It was published by Mahagujarat Dalit Navyuvak Mandal, Dariyapur. It was printed at Mansuri Printing Press in the Dhalgarwad area. The book has been translated, compiled, and edited by Ahmedabad-based scholar on Ambedkarite literature Amit Jyotikar.
About translating the book to English, Jyotikar said, “It is the first biography of Ambedkar ever and was written in Gujarati. I have translated it into English so that its reach could be expanded and others could also read it.” The translated book has been published by the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi. Notably, the price of the original book was kept as ‘Amulya (priceless)’ and was distributed among readers for free. The translated book has been priced at Rs 300.
