A court in Surat on Monday remanded Patidar leaders Alpesh Katheriya and Ashish Patel to one-day police remand, a day after they were held for their alleged involvement in blocking the National Highway-8 at Kamrej following the arrest of Hardik Patel last month.
Police in Rajkot on October 18 had arrested Hardik, convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, for allegedly insulting the national flag when he was the way to the cricket stadium where India and South Africa were playing an ODI.
After Hardik was arrested, Katheriya and other quota agitation supporters reached NH-8 at Kamrej in Surat district and blocked it for around one-and-a half-hour, disrupting traffic between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, police said. The protesters fled when a police team reached the spot.
Kamrej police station had recovered CCTV recordings of the protesters and lodged a complaint against Katheriya, co-covener of the Samiti in Surat, and others. Seven persons were held in connection with the protest, but Katheriya and Patel were evading arrest.
On Sunday night, the two surrendered before Kamrej police. Eight people are still absconding, police said.
The two were produced before Kathor court in Surat district to obtain police remand of 14 days. However, the court granted just one day remand to police.
“We have lodged complaint against them for damaging public property and violation of the District Magistrate notification… We also want to find out on whose direction they had blocked the highway, ” said Inspector P N Patel.
