Air India Boeing crash: 2-minute silence observed on International Yoga Day event in Diu

14 passengers from Diu died when the Air India Boeing flight crash-landed after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on June 12.

The Diu Union Territory (UT) administration, along with locals, on Saturday paid homage to 14 passengers from Diu who died in the Air India Boeing crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. There were 15 passengers from Diu on that plane – among whom British national Vishwas Kumar Ramesh is the only survivor. Vishwas Kumar Ramesh’s brother was among those dead.

The UT administration had organised an International Yoga Day event at Diu town on Saturday. Several officials from various government departments, locals, and school students participated in the event. Before the celebrations began, a two-minute homage was paid to the 14 passengers from Diu who died in the plane crash. Some of the relatives of the 14 deceased were present at the event.

After two minutes of mourning, the participants performed yoga asanas under the guidance of a yoga instructor.

On Thursday afternoon, the body of Portuguese national Shantubhai Bhica, 60, of Patelwadi-Bucharwada in Diu, reached the village from the Ahmedabad civil hospital.

Bhica and his wife Valubai Rama, 55, both of whom held Portuguese nationality, were on the London Gatwick flight, headed to Wembley. Both their sons are employed in blue-collar jobs in Wembley, and they came down to Diu after learning about the death of their parents.

Rama’s body was handed over to her children after DNA matching on Tuesday. Her body was cremated on the same day at Muktidham cremation home in Patelwadi-Bucharwada.

Among the 14 deceased from Diu who were on the flight, eight were Portuguese citizens, three British nationals, and four Indian citizens.

The Portuguese nationals were Chandu Baguane, 35, from Dagachi village, Devji Lacmane, 60, and his wife Vanita Cana, 55, from Dagachi, Santubhai Bica and his wife Valubai Rama from Patelwadi-Bucharwada, Ramila Premji Vassaramo, 60, from Fudam village, Girish Lalgi, 35, and Hemaxi Shantilal, 30, from Gandhipura villages. British nationals Aadiv Girish, 5, and Taksvi Girish, 3, both residents of Gandhipura, and Ajaykumar Bhalaiya, 35, from Patelwadi-Bucharwada village. The Indian nationals were Manish Babu, 35, from Patelwadi-Bucharwada village, Manav Amrutlal, 25, from Vanakbara and Faizan Rafik, 25, from Dagachi.
