THE Ahmedabad (city) District Education Officer (DEO) on Tuesday sent a notice to a private school in Ahmedabad, where a class X student was stabbed to death allegedly by another student of the school outside its main gate on August 19, directing the management to suspend the school principal, administration head and other staff concerned for “serious negligence” on their part.

This is the third notice sent to the school by the DEO – the first on August 19, the day of the incident, and second on August 23.

“During investigation by the Crime Branch, serious negligence on the part of the school principal and staff has come out. Also, under BNS Section 211 (b) and Section 239, a case has been registered against the school principal, security guard and administration staff. So, the principal, administration head and staff responsible should be suspended and a report should be submitted to the DEO office on the action taken,” said the notice issued by Ahmedabad (city) DEO Rohit Chaudhary on Tuesday.

BNS Section 211(b) concerns the punishment for omitting to provide notice or information to a public servant about the commission of an offense while BNS Section 239 addresses the separate offense of intentionally failing to give information about a committed offense.

“Till date, the school has not submitted any response nor informed the office about the incident that happened on August 19 between 12.30 pm and 12.45 pm. This shows grave and serious negligence and apathy. The injured student was lying in a serious condition for a long time at your school compound, but no steps were taken to save the injured student which shows your apathy,” the notice added.

On the directions of the DEO, the school, which was closed after a group of protesters barged into it and vandalised its properties following the death of the student on August 20 at a hospital, started online classes for Classes VI till XII from Monday. Other classes too have been asked to undertake online classes at the earliest. The school has ICSE syllabus from Class I till XII and Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) syllabus in Class XI and XII.

“As part of an exercise to prevent unwanted aggressive incidents in schools, teachers in various schools will be given responsibility keeping in mind the mental health of the students. For this, a phased training programme will be organised soon,” Ahmedabad (city) DEO Rohit Chaudhary said in a statement.

To ensure such incidents are not repeated and to develop a sense of discipline and safety among school students, Ahmedabad city DEO office organised a day-long brainstorming session with the school administrators, principals and psychologists at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA). In the session, psychologists and school administrators presented their ideas.
