The Ahmedabad city police on Monday issued a notification allowing the bursting of firecrackers on the eve of Christmas and New Year for a duration of 35 minutes, subject to strict conditions. Police Commissioner G S Malik issued the order permitting only Supreme Court-recognised green firecrackers and low-emission crackers.

As per the notification dated December 22, issued under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), firecrackers may be burst only between 11:55 pm on December 24 and 12:30 am on December 25. Similarly, crackers will be allowed between 11:55 pm on December 31 and 12:30 am on January 1.

The notification stated, “Manufacture and sale of only green and those firecrackers is allowed which have been recognised by the Supreme Court. Manufacturing and sale of any other firecrackers than these has been prohibited by the Supreme Court.”

It further noted that the Supreme Court has prohibited firecrackers that cause excessive noise and air pollution, including joint firecrackers, series crackers or laris, as they are harmful to health.

The sale of Supreme Court-recognised firecrackers will be permitted only through licensed traders. The notification also prohibits the sale of all kinds of firecrackers on e-commerce platforms.

To curb noise pollution, the order stated that only firecrackers authorised by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) may be sold or used.

The bursting of firecrackers will not be allowed within a 100-metre radius of hospitals, nursing homes, health centres, educational institutions, courts and religious places, which fall under silent zones. Firecrackers will also be prohibited in markets, on streets and public roads, and near places storing inflammable materials such as petrol pumps, LPG bottling plants, LPG storage units and near airports.
