Three still missing 4 days after plane crashed into doctors’ hostel; 8 confirmed dead

Bodies of deceased handed over to their families, says BJ Medical College Dean

Four days after an Air India plane crashed into the Atulyam Hostels of BJ Medical College on June 12, three persons remained missing on Monday. A total of eight people have so far been confirmed dead.

While four medical students had died after the plane crashed into the top floor of the building where the students and others were having lunch, four others were killed on the hostel campus as three out of the four hostel buildings went up in flames and debris of the aircraft filled over 500 metres of the campus area.

Dean Dr Minakshi Parikh told The Indian Express that as of Monday, the bodies of the eight deceased were handed over to their families.

The bodies, which have so far been handed over, belonged to students who died after the tail part of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into their mess, making them the first casualties of the tragedy.

The deceased students have been identified as Rakesh Diyora from Gujarat’s Bhavnagar, Aryan Rajput from Borcharnan village in Rajasthan’s Barmer district, Manav Bhadoo from Pilibanga village in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district, and Jay Prakash Chaudhary from Jigsoli village in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district.

While a doctor’s wife doctor was killed in the incident, another doctor lost three members of his family. Dr Parikh said that their bodies were also handed over to the families for the final rites.

One of the missing persons is a doctor who had come to visit his his sister and brother-in-law at the Atulyam Hostels. His name has not been disclosed, but it has been learnt that his brother-in-law is a student of BJ Medical College.

Sarla, who is a cook at the hostel, and her granddaughter Aadhya, an infant, are also missing. Notably, Sarla’s entire family works for the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. While Sarla was cooking for the students at the hostel at the time of the incident, her son and daughter-in-law had gone to deliver food to the doctors of the hospital. They had left Aadhya with Sarla.
