Ahmedabad collects 550 tonnes of garbage across 150 venues after Coldplay concerts

According to details obtained from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of the AMC, a total of 492 sanitation workers were deployed in two shifts over two days across all the venues and routes falling within the crowd ambit of the concert, said Vijay Mistry, Director of SWM.

Just two days of Music of the Spheres concerts by British band Coldplay in Ahmedabad led to generation of 550 tonnes of garbage in and around the Narendra Modi Stadium, which hosted the event, and 149 other venues and transport routes used by the 2.5 lakh attendees.

The information was part of a statement from the Gujarat government issued Thursday on the various “records set” on account of its “unprecedented organisation” during the Coldplay concert. Regarding the successful organization of international events, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, was quoted as saying,”Gujarat has successfully hosted events like the G-20 Summit and the Cricket World Cup in the year 2023. World-class infrastructure has also been built in the state for such international events. The success of the Coldplay concert in Ahmedabad further strengthens the state’s reputation as a successful organizer of global events.”

With 24 superior sanitary staff supervising the operations, 50 litter-picking teams worked with bin-bags round-the-clock for real-time waste collection and 52 sanitation workers were just deployed to the 13 parking venues around the stadium.

With regards to equipment, a total of 14 JCB machines and 27 trucks were deployed in four shifts to handle waste removal, along with 12 sweeping machines, two mist cannons, and four water tankers. There were five compactors and 10 additional SWM vehicles facilitated for seamless waste transportation, as per data from the civic body.

A total of 61 trips in four shifts were made for waste disposal in which, 550 tonnes of waste was collected and responsibly disposed of. Further, extra dustbins were provided to 140 shops around the stadium and garbage from there was also lifted in real time.

The AMC also carried out cleanliness operations at 78 prominent hotels catering to domestic and international visitors, including Taj Skyline, Hyatt Regency, ITC Narmada, Courtyard by Marriott, Novotel, Radisson Blu, and Renaissance Ahmedabad.

Sanitation teams were also deployed at 14 AMTS bus stands; four railway stations, including Kalupur Sabarmati, Maninagar, and Chandlodia; 10 metro stations, and 29 BRTS stations.

The state government Thursday also said that more than 900 flights landed at Ahmedabad International Airport in three days, almost double than usual.

In a statement on Monday, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) had said, “GMRC has achieved its highest passenger journey 2,13,735 in Ahmedabad on January 25, 2025. Further 1,91,529 passenger journeys was achieved on January 26.” This was even higher than World Cup matches at the stadium.

The security arrangement in the city in view of the concerts included over 4,000 informed personnel, including one team of the Special Composite Group (30 SCG) of the NSG stationed in Gujarat, 3 Quick Response Teams (QRTs), 1 team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 10 teams of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and 2 CCTV surveillance van teams apart from the police force. The Ahmedabad City police had deployed a 3,825-strong force, including 14 DCPs, 25 ACPs, 63 Inspectors, 142 Sub-Inspectors, and 3,581 Head Constables and Constables.
