It was revealed that Sureshbhai G Prajapati had filed a number of lT Returns in the name of individual assessees. Several TDS certificates were also attached with these ITRs.

The Special Court for CBl cases, Ahmedabad Rural, on Friday sentenced a couple to imprisonment and slapped a fine on them in a case of fake TDS refunds.
The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), at the special CBI court, sentenced Suresh G Prajapati, the then Income Tax Practitioner, and his wife Sobhna Suresh Prajapati to three years of imprisonment with a total fine of Rs 60,000 in a case of obtaining refund based on false/forged TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) certificates.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered the instant case on December 31, 2007, on allegations that Income Tax (IT) refunds were regularly made from Ward 12(3), Income Tax Office, Narayan Chambers, Ahmedabad, on the basis of bogus TDS certificates.
It was revealed that Sureshbhai G Prajapati had filed a number of lT Returns in the name of individual assessees. Several TDS certificates were also attached with these Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
It was ascertained that though these certificates were bogus in nature, the refunds, to the tune of around Rs 3.61 lakh, were allowed to be processed from Ward 12 (3) of Ahmedabad, which were misappropriated.
According to a statement from the agency on Friday, after completion of the investigation, CBI filed two chargesheets — one on December 31, 2008, and the other on January 3, 2011.
After the trial, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced them.
