(Representational Image)A departmental inquiry has been initiated against a suspended police officer allegedly involved in arresting and torturing a Surat businessman who had already secured an anticipatory bail in a cheating case from the Supreme Court. The top court had earlier this month taken note of the “illegal custody” of the businessman, and termed it as “grossest of contempt”. On Monday, the apex court said it will ask the Gujarat High Court to impart proper training to magistrates.
Meanwhile, Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar Monday initiated a departmental inquiry against R Y Raval, the suspended inspector linked to Vesu police station. He has been accused of torturing businessman Tushar Shah during the remand period.
Shah was arrested by Raval on December 13. He was remanded for four days in police custody in the cheating case filed by complainant Abhishek Goswami on July 27, 2023. During his remand period, Shah was tortured by police and threatened to settle the pending dues of Rs. 1.65 crore towards Goswami.
The top court had on December 8 granted interim anticipatory bail to Shah in the cheating case. Shah then filed a contempt petition before the apex court, alleging he was tortured during the remand period.
The bench of Supreme judges B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta had earlier this month issued a notice to police officials and a judicial magistrate of Surat.
Tomar then initiated a primary inquiry against Raval. The inquiry was carried out by Surat Additional Commissioner of Police Crime Sharad Singhal. On the basis of the primary report, police inspector Raval was suspended last week and transferred to Surat police headquarters. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated, said officials.
