Three labourers died of asphyxiation while one is still in a critical condition undergoing treatment at a private hospital after they were affected by poisonous gas while doing maintenance work

Three labourers died of asphyxiation while one is still in a critical condition undergoing treatment at a private hospital after they were affected by poisonous gas while doing maintenance work in the drainage chamber of sewage treatment plant at Singhanpore here on Tuesday. Surat Municipal Commissioner M K Das initiated inquiry into the incident.

As per details, the maintenance work of cleaning and repairing of a drainage chamber was in progress at the sewage treatment plant at Singhanpore in the afternoon. The cleaning work contract was given to Enviro Control Associates of Surat.

Two labourers entered into the drainage chamber — which was 10-foot deep,six-foot long and six-foot wide — to repair the valve. Other labourers and supervisor of the company were also present at the spot. When first two labourers failed to come up after sometime, two more labourers entered into the chamber and even they showed no reactions from inside.

Suspecting something wrong might have happened inside the chamber, the fire brigade and top SMC officials were alerted. The fire brigade staff entered into the chamber and took out all the four labourers who were in unconscious state.

All the four labourers were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where three of them were declared dead, while one is still under critical condition. The three deceased are identified as Rohit Vasawa (24),Mohan Patel (27) and Kalpesh Patel (26),all residents of Surat city, while Sanjay Yadav (27) is still under critical condition.

Commissioner Das with his technical expert team rushed to the spot and examined the situation. The municipal commissioner said a high-level team would investigate into the incident and steps would be taken if negligence was found.

SMC executive engineer E H Pathan said,“We are shocked to know how the labourers have been affected by poisonous gas. Entire chamber was emptied before they were allowed to do cleaning activities. Even the maintenance work of valve was in progress. Investigation has been started into the incident to find out what actual had gone wrong.”
