The Gujarat Police on Tuesday suspended 10 traffic police personnel in Ahmedabad after taking cognizance of a video in which a Delhi-based man, Kanav Manchanda, alleged that he was asked to pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 after he told the personnel that he had a liquor bottle in his car while he was on way to watch the ICC World Cup final on Sunday.
Carrying or consuming liquor without a proper licence is illegal in Gujarat under the Prohibition law.
In the video, Manchanda is seen alleging that traffic police personnel stopped him near Nana Chiloda Circle and asked if he had alcohol in his car. When he said that he had one sealed bottle, “four or five policemen” took him around in their vehicle “harassing him”. He claimed that they first demanded Rs 2 lakh and finally agreed to Rs 20,000, which he paid by UPI.

Speaking to mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic East-Ahmedabad City) Safin Hasan said, “Kanav Manchanda was stopped by traffic police personnel, who illegally took money from him. A video was received by Ahmedabad Police from the media, Manchanda didn’t approach the police.” Traffic Division C has been assigned the case.
Hasan further said, “We have suspended one head constable and two police constables. Also, seven TRB (Traffic Brigade) personnel, who were involved in the act, have been suspended.”
K Division Traffic police station Inspector Agravat has been sent to Delhi with his team to meet Manchanda to see if he wants to file a complaint in the matter, he added.
“(Manchanda’s) vehicle was stopped at 10.30 am and at 11.09 am, we received a screenshot of the financial transaction that took place. The man who received the money, Arun Hadiyol, will be questioned,” Hasan said.
“They (those suspended) were not wearing bodyworn cameras… they should have informed their superior officers (of the incident), but they did not,” he added.
