Former Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra was appointed to the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) as a full-time member by the Union government in an order issued on Tuesday. On the same day, the government also appointed former Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba to the NITI Aayog as a full-time member.
A 1984-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax cadre, Mishra led the ED till September 15, 2023. His term ended after the Supreme Court curtailed his extended tenure following petitions that challenged multiple extensions granted to him by the government.
A government order announcing his appointment added that Mishra has been appointed in the rank and pay of secretary to the government of India, from the date of assumption of post.
The EAC-PM is an ‘independent’ body that advises the Union government, specifically the prime minister, on economic and related issues. A vacancy arose in the body following the death of its chairman Bibek Debroy in November 2024.
Its current chairman is economist Suman Berry, who is also the Vice Chairperson of the NITI Aayog, the government’s apex think tank.
Gauba, a 1982-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, served as Cabinet Secretary for five years, from 2019 to August 2024. He has also served as Union home secretary, secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and chief secretary of Jharkhand.
As a full-time member of the NITI Aayog, Gauba joins former Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chief Dr VK Saraswat, chairman of the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) Prof. Ramesh Chand, leading public health expert Dr VK Paul, and former executive director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Dr Arvind Virmani.
