Rohini Nilekani: Rs 20 cr every year for philanthropy

Rohini Nilekani has spent about Rs 215 crore for philanthropy activities since 2005.

Philanthropist Rohini Nilekani plans to provide Rs 20 crore every year for organisations towards addressing governance,environmental and other issues.

She recently raised about Rs 163 crore by partially selling her stake in software exporter Infosys,co-founded by her husband and technocrat Nandan Nilekani.

Noting that the whole amount would be used for philanthropy,she said already the funds are being given to “some very good organisations”.

“I have a budget of about Rs 15 to 20 crore a year… I have overshot my budget for this year,” Rohini Nilekani said in an interview.

Funding would be made for work in areas such as governance,transparency,access to justice and environmental issues.

Without divulging specific details,Rohini Nilekani said in the last few months she has funded about ten small and large organisations.

She has spend about Rs 215 crore for philanthropy activities since 2005.

Rohini Nilekani chairs Arghyam,a foundation that provides funds for organisations that work on groundwater and sanitation projects.

Summing up her overall experience in philanthropic activities,she said,”it is a satisfying journey. Sometimes it is frustrating,sometimes it is joyful”.
