India launch of AirAsia to be delayed beyond January

AirAsia India’s proposed take off in the Indian skies may get delayed beyond January as the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation is yet to inspect the AirAsia’s training facilities in Malaysia,as the airline has sought permissions to carry out aircraft maintenance and crew training in the southeast Asian country to save costs.

“They (AirAsia India) have adopted a very different model and have sought permission to carry out aircraft maintenance and crew training in Malaysia,” said a senior DGCA official.

“We are yet send our officials to Malaysia to inspect their maintenance and training facilities,” he added.

AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes had in June said that he was aiming for a November launch for AirAsia India. This was later postponed to December and then eventually to January due to regulatory hurdles.

The DGCA official acknowledged that the inspection of the airline’s Malaysian facilities could delay the proposed January launch of the airline.

The upcoming low-cost carrier in India had applied to the DGCA for an air operating permit on October 4,two weeks after it received the no-objection certificate from the ministry of civil aviation.
