Two months back, around the time the new Jharkhand government took charge, Arun started going for a daily run at dawn. All around Jharkhand there are youths like him, “getting ready”. Arun explains why: “I hear the government will hire many people. I want to become a policeman.”

There are other reasons for this hope. Local MP Jayant Sinha has selected Jarba under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.
After Class X, Arun had joined an ITI, but could not finish because of lack of funds. Arun’s father died when he was 13, and his brother helps their mother sell vegetables.

With the rules of recruitment for many government departments formulated, the ground is set for massive recruitment, including 70,000 personnel in police alone.

Arun once hoped to join the Army, even the CRPF. Now, police would do. “I am too short. The state government has relaxed criteria.”
He is doing BA (Hons) in geography as it is “about the earth, agriculture”. “These things I know.” In case the police job doesn’t come through, he will enrol in a polytechnic.

Having missed applying for a forest guard job’s exam, Arun has taken another precaution. Recently, he opened an account with Rs 200 in it. “So I can pay for application forms easily.”
