Maruti Suzuki has launched a new version of its premium-mid size sedan Ciaz in India. The newly launched vehicle is billed as the Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) featuring a mild-hybrid system that enhances the fuel economy of the car. The Ciaz SHVS with this new-age fuel-saving system is available only in diesel variants as of now; prices start from Rs 8.23 lakh and go up to Rs 10.17 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

The SHVS adds three new additional systems that help improve the fuel efficiency of the diesel variant of the sedan. The drivetrain of the vehicle incorporates an ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) which is a segment-first switchable start-stop system. The ISG allows the engine to shut-down when its idling in various day-to-day traffic conditions. The system cranks the engine back on again as soon as the driver depresses the clutch. The start-stop function will only work with the driver seat belt fastened and the driver side door shut, else it deactivates automatically. The system can also also be turned off at the press of a button inside the cabin.

Up next on offer is Deceleration Energy Regenerating function. This system helps store energy into the vehicle’s electrical system during deceleration or braking. In order to ensure this system works, the vehicle has to be decelerating while in gear, meaning the clutch pedal is not depressed and the vehicle must not be coasting in neutral. The third and last addition that the SHVS system brings to the Ciaz is called Engine Power Assist. Like its name suggests, the system assists the engine with additional electric power from the ISG when the vehicle accelerates.

Powering the Ciaz SHVS will be the same 1.3-litre Multijet diesel mill producing 90PS of peak power and 200Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to 5-speed gearbox as before, but thanks to the mild-hybrid tech, the ARAI-certified fuel economy figure for the Ciaz diesel has gone up to 28.09km/l from 26.21km/l earlier!

On the outside, the Ciaz SHVS remains unchanged from the standard car, although you do get ‘SHVS’ badging on the boot-lid and the fenders. The interior of the car also do not receive any major upgrades; it gets an idle start/stop display along with a gear-shift indicator.

The Ciaz has been the second-best selling sedan in its segment. By launching the SHVS version, the Ciaz will have the first mover advantage in the C-segment sedan market place that will help it take the fight against the segment leader, the Honda City, in a more effective way. Thanks to the government’s incentives on hybrid cars, the Ciaz SHVS also benefits from a subsidy of Rs 13,000, making the car a more value for money proposition than ever before.
The introductory ex-showroom, Delhi, prices for the Ciaz SHVS variants are as follows,
Ciaz VDI SHVS : Rs. 8.23 Lakh
Ciaz VDI (O) SHVS : Rs. 8.38 Lakh (new variant)
Ciaz VDI+ SHVS : Rs. 8.82 Lakh
Ciaz ZDI SHVS : Rs. 9.53 Lakh
Ciaz ZDI+ SHVS : Rs. 10.18 Lakh

The SHVS system is paired to the turbocharged 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, DDiS200 diesel motor which also on offer on the earlier diesel variants, it also continues to be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The peak power and torque figures remain the same: 90PS @ 4000rpm and 200Nm @ 1750rpm, respectively. The efficiency figure has improved tremendously thanks to the new powertrain though, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS diesel-hybird has a ARAI-certified mileage of 28.09 km/l, which makes it the most efficient diesel car in the country, taking the top spot from fellow stable-mate the Swift Dzire.
