He originates from Tangardih, Gumla district, Bihar (presently Jharkhand), and is currently serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) from the major tribal-represented Lohardaga constituency in Jharkhand.

Bhagat’s political journey commenced in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, where he served from 2000 to 2005, holding various ministerial positions in the Government of Jharkhand.

In 2009, Bhagat transitioned to the Lok Sabha, representing the Lohardaga constituency. From 2014 to 2019, he served as the Minister of State for Tribal Affairs in the Narendra Modi government.

The 2019 Lok Sabha elections saw Bhagat retain his seat for the BJP. The election was a closely contested battle between Sudarshan Bhagat of the BJP and Sukhdeo Bhagat of the INC.

Bhagat secured a total of 371,595 votes, accounting for 45.45% of the total votes. This win further reaffirmed the BJP’s popularity in the region and its developmental policies.
