Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury

Born in 1938, Chowdhury's political lineage goes back to his late brother, A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, who previously held the Malda Lok Sabha seat. He began his political career in 1996, winning the Kaliachak assembly seat, which he held until 2006. This experience laid the groundwork for his entry into national politics through the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

As an MP, Chowdhury consistently raised concerns about Maldaha's development. He advocates for improving infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and educational opportunities in the region. He played a key role in securing funds for projects like the four-laning of the NH34 highway and the expansion of Malda Medical College.

Beyond local issues, Chowdhury participated in national debates on various topics, including health policy, minority welfare, and agriculture. He served as the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare from 2012 to 2014 under the UPA government. This experience granted him insights into national policymaking and allowed him to contribute to public health initiatives.

However, Chowdhury's tenure was not without criticism. Some question his effectiveness in delivering tangible improvements to Maldaha, citing persistent challenges like poverty and unemployment. Others point to his affiliation with the Indian National Congress (INC), currently in opposition, suggesting limitations in influencing decision-making.

Despite these criticisms, Chowdhury continues to enjoy strong support in Maldaha. His accessibility, proactive approach, and long-standing connection with the community resonate with many voters. He actively utilizes social media to engage with constituents and address their concerns directly.
