The Pimpri Chinchwad police have been allotted three additional DCP posts and six additional ACP posts (File Photo)In view of the rising incidence of crime in rapidly urbanising peripheral areas, the Maharashtra government has issued a government resolution (GR) approving the allocation of additional Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), and new police stations for the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police jurisdictions.
Under the decision, Pune City will get five new police stations, while Pimpri Chinchwad will get two. The move will also involve a reorganisation of police stations under the respective jurisdictions of DCPs and ACPs.
On Sunday, the state Home Department issued multiple GRs for Pune City and Pimpri Chinchwad police. The decisions follow communications from the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra, and subsequent deliberations by a high-level committee of the state government.
The Pune City police have been allotted two additional zonal DCP posts, taking the total to seven, and four additional divisional ACP posts, increasing the number to 16. Five new police stations will be created – Narhe (carved out of Sinhagad Road police station), Laxmi Nagar (from Yerawada police station), Manjari (from Hadapsar police station), Lohegaon (from Vimantal police station), and Yewalewadi (from Kondhwa and Bharati Vidyapeeth police stations). For these five police stations, 830 additional posts across various ranks have been approved.
The Pimpri Chinchwad police have been allotted three additional DCP posts and six additional ACP posts. Under the reorganised structure, the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate will have four zonal DCPs. Two new police stations will also be created including Chakan South, carved out of Chakan and Alandi police stations, and North Mahalunge, carved out of Mahalunge MIDC police station. For these two police stations, 332 additional posts across various ranks have been approved, according to the GR.
Pune district currently has three separate police jurisdictions : Pune City, Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune Rural. The Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate was formed in 2018 by carving out areas from the Pune City and Pune Rural jurisdictions.
Apart from areas under the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, which include older residential localities, modern urban spaces and industrial townships, the commissionerate’s jurisdiction also covers several rural and semi-urban pockets. It includes residential, commercial and industrial areas along the Pune–Mumbai Highway, with a significant floating migrant population; a combination that has given the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate a distinct crime profile.
Meanwhile, Pune City, with its expanding limits into rapidly urbanising peripheral areas, is facing policing challenges on multiple fronts. Rapid population growth, large-scale real estate development and increased migration have stretched existing police infrastructure and manpower. Officials said the addition of new police stations and senior officers is aimed at improving response times and strengthening law and order in these newly developed zones.
