Raj Singh went to the Pune General Post Office (GPO) on September 1 to send an overseas parcel to the US. However, he was asked to visit the next day as the revised rate of the overseas parcel service was not being reflected in the computer system. The next day he was asked to visit on September 6.
Just like Singh, the other customers who had been visiting the GPO over the past one week had returned disappointed as the service was not available due to a ‘technical problem’.
“When I went to the GPO the third day, I was again asked to visit the next day. I started arguing with the officials and accused them of causing inconvenience. So, the staff finally agreed to send my parcel by using postage stamp as against cash payment which is the general procedure. Though they have sent my parcel, I am not sure if it will reach its destination as the postage stamp rate might differ with the revised rate,” said Singh.
L D Kumbhar, Deputy Postmaster (Gen) HSG – 1, Pune GPO, said, “There was a technical problem due to which we have been unable to accept overseas parcels. The problem started on September 1. However, since September 3, 4 and 5 were holidays, the customers faced inconvenience for two days. On September 6, we started accepting overseas parcels, using postage stamp payment. The technical problem got resolved Tuesday evening and now we are accepting overseas parcels using the normal mode of payment— cash.”
Kumbhar added that on an average, the Pune GPO received at least 50 orders of overseas parcels daily.
Singh said, “People choose to parcel through Pune GPO as it is inexpensive as compared to courier. But such inconvenience is too big a price to pay. I regularly visit the GPO to send overseas parcels and have witnessed people standing in long queues. One can imagine how many people must have suffered.”
