Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress leadership Tuesday of “misusing” Parliament to “damage the country’s resources and hurt its dreams” while hailing Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for “understanding the conspiracy” of the Congress and breaking ranks with the opposition to end the logjam in the House.
At a meeting of the BJP parliamentary party, Modi said “some people” have been working to stall economic growth — it was repeated by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley later when the Congress forced adjournment of Rajya Sabha without allowing a discussion on the goods and services tax (GST) bill that the government had been hoping would be passed this session.
“The Prime Minister said a message has gone out as the session draws to a close that there are some people who are misusing Parliament to stop the pace of the country’s development. Their main goal is to stop economic growth,” Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters after the meeting.

A party source quoted Modi as saying, “In order to stop us, they (Congress leadership) are trying to damage the country’s resources and hurting its dreams.”
Sources said Modi slammed the Congress action as “anti-democracy” and praised parties “who have shown a positive attitude” because they have “stepped in the right direction.”
“He expressed his gratitude to them, especially Mulayam Singh Yadavji, and all parties which have felt that this is a conspiracy to stop the country’s progress. He hailed them and asked the party and members to do so as well,” Rudy said.
Modi drew a parallel between the welfare schemes his government had initiated and the Dandi March by Mahatma Gandhi. Referring to the impact of the march on the independence struggle, he urged party MPs to make the government’s programmes a social movement.

Telling party MPs not to focus on “protocol”, he said they must go for extensive mass contact. “Reach out to the people… Do not bother about media reports, get directly in touch with the people. Don’s get trapped in protocol… You should visit your constituencies extensively, conduct mass contact programmes,” he said.
MPs were asked to enrol 4,000 women in each constituency between August 15 and August 29 across the country under insurance schemes of the BJP-led government.
BJP ministers Nitin Gadkari and Ravi Shankar Prasad too attacked the Congress leadership for what they called “holding Parliament hostage to ego”.
Gadkari said the sentiment driving the Congress was that “we will drown but we will get you drowned as well”.

“They could not do anything when they were in power. They failed and now they want that our government should also not do anything and fail,” Gadkari told reporters.
Prasad slammed Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi for the impasse, saying they want the BJP government to fail. “Should Parliament be made hostage to their ego? That is the simple point. Parliament cannot become an ego battle of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
