The firing at Kozhikode airport that claimed the life of a CISF head constable was an outcome of a standing feud between the CISF and staff of the AAI, particularly those in the fire and rescue wing, numbering 40 out of 150 AAI staff.
Sources at the airport said the fire and rescue staff at the airport had targeted CISF inspector Seetharam Chaudhiri recently after he refused to allow a fire rescue staff to carry a bag into the sensitive air area in the airport without examining.
“They seem to have been waiting for a chance to hit Chaudhiri. That is way, the person who picked up a verbal fight with Chaudhiri called others over phone to reach the spot. Unfortunately, an innocent person has fallen victim,’’ sources said.

CISF used to even frisk the DRI and Customs staff, but the fire and rescue staff had always against being subjected to mandatory security check. The airport employees union is generally headed by those employed in the fire fighting department.
“Those in the fire fighting section idle away most of their time. They have terminal near the eastern side of the runway. In uniform, they spend most of the time engaging in some sort of entertaining,’’ source said.
For the CISF personnel, there had been several incidents of brush up with the fire and rescue men. “They would be carrying bag, containing food or tools (if working in the engineering department). The CISF will not allow the bag inside without checking. This had let to minor incidents of verbal fight between these two section,’’ sources said.

Sources said the AAI staff members, even the cleaning workers, have all-area pass in the airport. At the same time, even all officials of the DRI and Customs do not enjoy that privilege. This has created an impression among a section of AAI staff that they need not undergo the mandatory frisking and examination. Last year, a senior superintendent with the house keeping at the airport was caught for facilitating smuggling in of gold,’’ sources said.
However, the AAI employees union blamed the CISF men for causing the tragedy. We are not against any security checking. On several occasions, they have shown over enthusiasm. Sometimes, they ask us to open the lunch box or even unfasten the belt. Such situations have to be avoided. Some of the CISF staff work like machines,’’ said a spokesperson of the association.
