Kalburgi murder: Karnataka Police arrest youth for provocative tweet

Police in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka have arrested Bhuvith Shetty, a 25-year-old activist of the right wing Bajrang Dal, in connection with an inflammatory tweet he posted on Twitter on Sunday following the murder of rationalist and Kannada scholar M M Kalburgi in the north Karnataka town of Dharwad.

Based on the tweet the Dakshina Kannada police had earlier taken up a suo motu case of provocation to cause riots and criminal intimidation against the youth from the Bantwal region of the district. Bhuvith Shetty was secured in rural Bantwal where he had been hiding since Sunday, Dakshina Kannada SP S D Sharanappa said.

Shetty had posted a tweet intimidating outspoken and rationalist writer K S Bhagwan of dire consequences shortly after the killing of Kalburgi in Dharwad.  “Then it was Anantamoorty and now its MM Kalburgi. Mock Hinduism and die a dog’s death. And dear K S Bhagwan you are next,” Shetty posted using the handle @garudapurana.

The tweet was deleted shortly afterwards after it began doing the rounds online.

Based on the tweet and public complaints regarding it the Dakshina Kannada police have taken up a suo motu case against Shetty. “We have taken up a suo motu case. He has been booked under section 153 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code,” the SP said.
