Senior journalist Prabhu Chawla and former Mumbai Police Commissioner R D Tyagi had appeared as witnesses in the UK during the hearing of Lalit Modi’s application, where they supported Modi’s plea when they were cross-examined, India Today TV reported on Friday.

It also said three former Supreme Court judges — Justices U C Banerjee, Jeevan Reddy and S B Sinha — had given legal opinion in Modi’s support after his passport had been revoked by the Regional Passport Office in Mumbai.

Chawla and Tyagi, the channel reported, had appeared as witnesses in London in the hearings to decide on Modi’s application to the UK Border Agency for leave to remain in the UK as the Representative of an Overseas Business — namely Indofil Industries Limited. They gave statements to back his application, along with three other witnesses who appeared in his support — Modi’s wife Minal, his father K K Modi and R K Malhotra, chief executive of Indofil.

On Friday night, Chawla tweeted, “Proud to be in the company of epitome of honesty and probity Justice Reddy who spoke the truth and nothing else.” Another tweet stated, “Wait. Picture to abhi baki hei. Ye to teaser hei.” He followed it up with, “I fear none. Giving a statement is not a crime.”

Besides his own statement, Modi’s application to the UK Border Agency also includes supporting statements from Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi and Robert Nicholls, a founding partner of a South Africa-based security solutions firm called NSA contracted by the IPL.
