The three civilians who were killed in the attack have been identified as Amarjeet, 55, Nirmala Devi, 45, and Ghulam Rasool, 80. The last two were in the hospital near the police station when they were hit by bullets.
AMARJEET, 55
Like any other day, Amarjeet woke up at 4 am on Monday to cater to the early morning customers at his “chhole-kulcha” outlet in Dinanagar market, about 200 metres from the police station. His younger son, Ankur, gave him a ride on his motorcycle, from their home in Jagatpur village, about 10 kilometres from Dinanagar market.

Amarjeet arrived at his shop at about 5 am. He was killed about 12 minutes later. “I saw three persons in army uniform firing at him while he was standing outside his shop,” said an eyewitness. Amarjeet died on the spot.
“What wrong had we done… my husband was killed for no fault of his,” said his wife, Kiran. Amarjeet was the only earning member of his family.
NIRMALA DEVI, 45
Nirmala Devi was in Kiran Hospital, located near the police station, to take care of her ailing daughter, Sonia. Their room was on the first floor of the hospital building.
“We heard firing. Suddenly, my mother was hit in the stomach, a second bullet hit her in the back. A third bullet hit a hospital staffer who came in front of me,” recalled Sonia.
Employed as a Class IV worker in a private school with a monthly salary of Rs 2,400, Nirmala, a resident of Awankha village near Dinanagar, was the only earning member of her family.
Her husband died 15 years ago in a boat capsize incident.
GHULAM RASOOL, 80
Rasool was admitted to Kiran Hospital on Sunday. “I was with him in the hospital, but came home last night,” said his daughter-in-law, Salima.
She was making breakfast for him, when she heard that he had been shot.
12-hour operation
5 am
Three armed men in army uniform were spotted in the Dinanagar main market area, about 200 metres from the police station.
5:12 am
Amarjeet, the owner of an eatery located 200 metres from the Dinanagar police station, was shot.
He died on the spot.
5:13 am
The terrorists tried to stop a bus, but the driver sped away. They fired at the bus, injuring two passengers.
5:25 am
They shot at two more persons, Apjeet Singh and Jarnail Singh, outside the police station. The injured, employees of Tata Communications, were engaged in some cable repair work.
5:30 am
The terrorists entered Dinanagar police station and engaged in indiscriminate fire, killing four police personnel. Two persons in a nearby hospital were also killed.
10 am
The first terrorist was killed.
1:10 pm
SP Baljeet was shot, rushed to hospital.
2 pm
Second terrorist was killed, third terrorist killed soon after.
