Citing the horrific gangrape of a photojournalist last August as one among the seven reasons, the Prithviraj Chavan-led Maharashtra government has initiated steps to take over the defunct Shakti Mills complex, spread over 25,067 sq metres in Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi.

Huge public outrage followed the gangrape of the photojournalist inside the mill complex. Concerns over security in and around the abandoned mill further escalated when investigations revealed past incidences of sexual violence inside the compound. Overrun by wild bushes and crumbling structures, the mill land had become a den for anti-social elements.

The state government, which owns the land, recently began proceedings for termination of its lease deed with Shree Shakti Mill Limited (SSML), promoters of the defunct mill. It now intends to take over the land’s possession. On June 16 this year, the state’s revenue department issued a notice to the SSML for termination of the lease deed and resumption of the land parcel. The same notice was also served on the official liquidator of the Bombay High Court, which has been in control of the property since January 21, 1981, when the court passed an order winding up the firm.

Podar Shakti Synthetics Pvt. Ltd, which is a 86 per cent contributory in the SSML, has submitted on the firm’s behalf opposing the state government’s move arguing that the “contentions made by the state are not tenable.”
