The Supreme Court on Monday sought the NDA government’s stand on the validity and the manner of collecting information for the Aadhaar card under the aegis of the Unique Identification Authority of India.
Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told a bench led by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu that he would come back with instruction next week on the issues raised in a PIL, which, among various other things, has also sought a directive to “destroy” all Aadhaar-related information collected by the authorities so far.
The PIL moved by Mathew George, a retired Army officer, has alleged that the security credentials of agencies collecting information from citizens were not thoroughly scrutinised. It further challenged the provision under the Citizenship Act, which empowered the Centre to issue national identity cards despite allegedly being in breach of the fundamental rights relating to privacy and dignity.
Arguing for the petition, senior advocate Gopal Subramanium stressed that it was the responsibility of the state to protect citizens from violations of their right to privacy.
