Controversial televangelist Zakir Naik Sunday revealed that he is all set to return to India and will hold a press conference in Mumbai Tuesday.

Though Mumbai Police has refused to divulge the details of Naik’s arrival, citing law and order issue, it is keeping tight vigil on the preacher and may even summon him upon his return.

Sources added that not just the Mumbai Police, sleuths from various central and state intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies will monitor the controversial Islamic preacher’s every move, right from his arrival at Mumbai airport. The police are also preparing for the protest and support marches that might take place in the city upon his arrival.

“Given the present situation, he would be under constant vigil. There are outfits, both in support of and against Naik, and therefore there would be visible police presence wherever Naik goes to ensure that there is no untoward law and order situation,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express. A contingent of the local police is already stationed outside the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) office in South Mumbai, a charitable organisation founded by Naik.

The Special Branch of the Mumbai Police, which is probing the speeches and videos of Naik, is likely to submit its report to the Mumbai Police chief by the end of the week.

On Tuesday, Naik is also scheduled to address a press conference. The Mumbai Police hasn’t expressed any objection to the press meet. However, they said that they would study the content of his interaction with the media. “It’s a private gathering and therefore we don’t have any locus standi in it. However, whatever he says will be examined by us,” the official added.
