A newly-wed Muslim woman has divorced her husband by saying talaq thrice over the phone after her in-laws allegedly demanded a car in dowry. The incident has taken place at Daha village in UP’s Baghpat district.

The local Panchayat has approved the triple talaq and slapped a fine of Rs 2.75 lakh on the woman’s in-laws. Her husband’s family has paid the fine to the woman’s family. “My husband demanded a car within two hours of our marriage.I divorced him instead of fulfilling his demand. Other girls should take the same step ,” said Mohsina.

The woman was married to Arif, who hails from a nearby village, on July 21. Mohsina alleged that the demand for the car was raised soon after she reached her in-laws’ place. She then called her mother to her in-laws’ place who tried to reason with her daughter’s in-laws, but failed.

The issue went to the local Panchayat, which met on July 24. Village headman Sushil Rana said Mohsina was willing to live with her husband, but he was adamant on the demand. Eventually, Mohsina said talaq thrice over the phone and Arif followed suit, said Rana.
