SC verdict on Singur Tata Nano plant: No question of apology, says Left Front

The Left Front ruled out an apology Wednesday after the Supreme Court struck down its acquisition of land in Singur in 2006, when it was power.

“This is not an issue of tendering an apology. We have said clearly earlier that the land cannot be acquired against the wishes of the farmer,” said CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra. “The land was back then acquired under the Land Acquisition Act of 1894.”

He added, “We were never opposed to returning the land… Now the question will be how the land will be returned and in what condition. What will happen to those who had taken compensation?”

The Congress, which had agitated against the acquisition, welcomed the judgment.

“I was personally with the Trinamool Congress during the movement,” said Congress veteran Abdul Mannan, now Leader of the Opposition against the Trinamool government. “I feel the farmers of Singur today got justice.”
